689,655. Machinery safety devices. WILKINS & MITCHELL. Ltd., and HOLBERRY, E. G. Sept. 17, 1951 [Oct. 28, 1950], No. 26335 / 50. Class 80 (iv). A safety device for machines such as presses having a movable guard and a fluid-pressure operated friction clutch comprises a spring- loaded piston valve 16 controlling the fluidpressure supply from a conduit 17, connected to the clutch control valve, to a conduit 19 connected to the clutch operating device. The valve 16 has a projection 23 at its .lower end which co-operates with a notch 14 in a disc 13 rotated by a chain 6 for operating upper and lower guard members 1,.2 in vertical guides (not shown), on. the frame 3 of the machine. When the guards 1, 2 are closed, as shown, the notch 14 is in line with the projection 23 so that on pressure-fluid being supplied from the clutch operating valve the piston valve 16 is pressed down against its spring 20 to allow the pressurefluid to pass to conduit 19 to operate the clutch. Whilst the pressure is maintained above piston valve 16 and in the conduit 19 the guards cannot be opened by reason of the projection 23 engaging in notch 14. If the guards are not closed and the clutch operating valve is operated the projection 23 will engage the periphery of the disc 13 and the pressure-fluid will not be passed to conduit 19 to operate the clutch. An annular recess 21 and an axial passage 22 provides a pressure relief passage for the conduit 19 and clutch operating device. Specifications 604,374 and 636,095 are referred to.
