Abstract

718,538. Machinery guards. HUGHES. Ltd., G. H. March 25, 1953 [March 25, 1952], No. 7599/52. Class 80 (4) The supply line to a pneumatically-operated machine tool, such as a press, is controlled by an interlocking mechanism which ensures that other parts of the machine, such as a guard, are correctly positioned before the tool is operated. The mechanism comprises a cylinder having an inlet port 9 and an upwardly spring- loaded piston '2 whose rod carries a foot 5 which when the guard is closed may enter a recess in a slide 22. A spring-loaded valve 12 slidable on an extension of the piston normally closes an outlet port 10, while a pin 16 fixed to the piston carries a normally-open valve 17 in an exhaust port 18. A port 19 is connected to the press operating mechanism. If an attempt is made to start the press before the guard is closed, i.e. if air is admitted to the port 9, the piston 2 is depressed until the foot 5 strikes the slide 22. During this movement the spring 13 expands to hold the valve 12 closed so that no air can pass to the port 19. If, however. the guard has been closed and the foot 5 can enter the recess in the slide, the additional downward movement of the piston closes' the valve 17 and causes its lower face to engage and open the valve 12 and start the press. To stop the press the air supply to the inlet 9 is cut off, whereupon the piston 2 is lifted by its spring and opens the valve 17 to exhaust the press mechanism. The interlock mechanism may be used in a pneumatically-operated bar feed mechanism for lathes to ensure that air cannot pass to the spinner head to feed the bar until the bar feed tube is in line with the spindle of the mechanism and is locked, or may be used with pneumatic clamping devices for work operated upon by pneumatic tools. The piston 2 may. be urged upwardly by valve-controlled pneumatic pressure instead of a spring. According to the Provisional Specification a radial pin on the piston engages a slot in the valve and opens the latter when the foot 5 enters the recess in the slide 22.
