Abstract
688,272. Centrifugal governors. MACE, C. E. May 9, 1951 [Feb. 16, 1950], No. 4054/50. Class 57 A centrifugal governor comprises a rotary casing 11 containing one or more flyweights 25 movable along radial guides secured within the casing and urged inwardly by springs, and a governing sleeve 37 coaxial with the casing passes slidably through the casing wall 13 and has a head 38 in direct contact with the weight or weights so as to be moved axially thereby. The governor is preferably used for controlling the fuel injection pump of an internal combustion engine, and has a pair of radially movable flyweights 25, each of which is loaded by a pair of springs 28, 29. The spring 28 alone acts initially and controls the idling speed whilst both springs control the running speed. The spring loading is adjustable by nuts 32. A tapered surface 40 on each of the weights cooperates with a corresponding surface 39 on the head plate 38 of the axially slidable governing sleeve 37 which is loaded by a spring 45 inserted in the linkage 42, 43, 44 leading to the pump control rod. The fulcrum 46 of the link 43 is movable by the accelerator of the engine. The weights are guided by the inner surfaces of two diametrically opposite balance weights secured within the casing so that the latter, which is driven from the pump shaft, acts as a flywheel. The casing is split centrally in the plane of rotation to facilitate assembly of the governor.
