Class 57 [Also in Group XXVIII] In a fuel injection pump, the quantity of fuel injected and the timing of the injection is controlled by a centrifugal governor in which the weights 7 are loaded by a spring 19 to control the idling speed and a spring 18 to control the maximum speed and the fulcrum 23 of the lever 22 is adjusted manually to vary the quantity between these speeds and in addition the timing of injections is varied by adjusting the phase between the pump shaft 1 and its driving shaft 11 by a coupling actuated by the governor weight support 6 which is loaded by a spring 21. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the sleeve 3 is coupled to the shaft 1 and has splines 4 engaging splines 5 on the support 6 and the support 6 has helical splines 9 engaging similar splines on the sleeve 10. Alternatively, a toothed wheel which may have helical teeth, is secured to the support 6 to transmit the drive to the pump. The support 6 engages a stop 24 and subsequently the weights 7 expand against the action of spring 18.
