687,700. Beet-topping machines. GUYER, J. BUCHER-. March 12, 1951 [July 10, 1950], No. 5925/51. Class 6(iii) A beet-topping machine comprises a -walk-type tractor 1 with' two wheels 3 and handlebars 5, the front of the tractor being provided with a forwardly-extending U- shaped cantilever 18 from which'are floatingly suspended topping units, each comprising one or more power-driven feeler wheels 23 and an oblique horizontal blade 27. The cantilever is supported on a hollow bracket 14 containing a drive to a crossshaft 12. The cross-shaft carries laterallyadjustable sprockets .13 which transmit motion to the feeler wheels 23 through chain-drives 25. The feeler-wheels and knives 27 are carried by arms 22 pivoted at 21 on the cantilever arms 18 which are downwardly extended at the front to terminate in skids 19. The arms 22.carry abutments 29, which engage the cantilever arms when the whole machine is tilted by the handlebars, and enable the topping units to be raised clear of the ground.
