Abstract
685,316. Supply systems for welding arcs. FOSTER TRANSFORMERS & SWITCHGEAR. Ltd., and JENNINGS, R E. March 21, 1951 [March 30, 1950], No. 7960/50. Class 38 (iv). To improve the stability of an A.C. welding arc, particularly when using a stainless steel, bronze or other " difficult electrode E, in which ionization of the arc gap is assisted by a high-voltage high-frequency current obtained from a valve or spark-gap generator L, C<SP>1</SP>, a condenser C<SP>2</SP> charges from a low-impedance source T<SP>3</SP> over the arc gap when the last is rendered conducting by the high-frequency discharge and prolongs ionization of the gap until the current from the welding transformer T has risen to a value sufficient to maintain the arc. The source T<SP>3</SP> may be a low leakage reactance winding on transformer T, or on a separate transformer. Alternatively, when the transformer T feeds the welding circuit from a lowleakage secondary winding, the winding T<SP>3</SP> is dispensed with and the condenser is connected across the usual current regulating reactor Z in the welding circuit. A high-frequency " stopper " resistance R may be in series with the condenser.
