696,619. Supply systems for welding arcs. SOC. L'AIR LIQUIDE, SOC. ANON. POUR L'ETUDE ET L'EXPLOITAION DES PROCEDES G. CLAUDE. Oct. 10, 1951 [Feb. 1, 1951; July 24, 1951], No. 23603/51. Class 38 (iv). A welding arc, particularly one operating in a gas shield and supplied from, say, a lowfrequency transformer 1, is struck and stabilized by high-frequency current supplied by a crystalcontrolled valve generator into the welding line 12 by a step-down transformer 10 which matches the arc resistance to the resistance required by the generator for transference of maximum power, the length of the welding line being, say, between one eighth and one quarter (or an odd multiple thereof) of the wavelength of the highfrequency oscillation so as to ensure adequate striking voltage at the electrodes. The highfrequency return path may be in part formed by the work lead 7 and in part via earth and condenser 22. Alternatively, a separate return lead, forming with the welding line 12 a transmission line of characteristic impedance of between 100 and 300 ohms, may be employed. Condensers 20, 21, 26 may tune the windings of transformer 10.
