Abstract

494,652. Converting. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP PHILIPS' GLOEILAMPENFABRIEKEN. April 7, 1938, No. 10714. Convention date, April 10, 1937. [Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL] A mercury converter is provided with an auxiliary electrode which is arranged in the immediate vicinity of the cathode spot and is adapted to extinguish the main discharge when a positive voltage impulse is applied thereto. The main discharge is transferred from the main anode to the electrode upon the application of the impulse, and when the electrode becomes negative, as the result of oscillations in the circuit of the auxiliary electrode, the discharge is extinguished. The resistance of the electrode circuit should preferably be lower than 0À1 ohms. In one form, a converter 1, Fig. 1 is connected to a source 7 of continuous current through a load 8. An ignition electrode 5 is connected through a switch 10 and resistance 9 to the source 7. The auxiliary electrode 6 is arranged over an anchoring member 3 and the extinguishing potential is applied thereto by the discharge of a condenser 11 through a switch 12. The voltage across the condenser may be increased by the use of an additional source. In another form, a converter 1, Fig. 2, is connected to an A.C. source 13 through the load 8. The auxiliary electrode for extinguishing the arc is formed by the metallic holder 15, suitably extended, of the high-resistance ignition electrode 14. Condensers 21, 22 are charged positively during the blocking phase through a transformer 16 and valves 19, 20. A synchronous motor 25 connected to the A.C. source, drives rotary contacts 23, 24 which connect the condensers periodically to the ignition and control electrode. The condenser 21 is used for extinguishing the arc and the condenser 22 for ignition. The value of the rectified current may be controlled by adjusting the moment of extinction.
