Abstract

419,274. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 9, 1934, No. 20122. Convention date, July 7, 1933. [Class 38 (v).] The arc formed on breaking an A.C. circuit is quenched by connecting, in parallel with a section of the arc, a discharge device V of such a character that its breakdown potential lies below the ignition potential of the section of the arc, while its reverse discharge potential is so high that the device remains non-conducting for a sufficient period when the voltage reverses to allow of the deionization of the remaining section of the arc. The device V may be connected in series with a resistance W and in parallel with a high resistance Wo across one of a pair of breaks in series, or alternatively, as shown, it may be connected between one of the electrodes E2 and an auxiliary electrode C placed in the path of the arc formed between the main electrodes E1, E2. The device V may be of the mercury cathode type, or it may have a heated cathode with or without grid control.
