Abstract

681,637. Supply systems for series-connected space discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., CLARKE, M. G., and PRIVETT, H. L. Aug. 1, 1951 [Sept. 1, 1950], No. 21679/50. Class 38 (iv). Two or more low pressure discharge lamps L<SP>1</SP>, L<SP>2</SP> are started by shunting all except one by a condenser C of such capacitance that on closing a supply switch S substantially the whole of the high no-load voltage of the secondary winding TS of a high reactance ballast transformer T is applied to the unshunted lamp L<SP>2</SP> which thereupon strikes, and due to the ensuing fall in volt drop across this lamp the high secondary voltage is applied across the condenser(s) C to strike the other lamp(s), whereupon the secondary voltage drops to a sufficiently low running value. Each lamp may have a conducting starting strip (not shown) and each thermionic electrode E is shortcircuited.
