Abstract

681,406. Cartons; paper and like containers; opening cartons. BAHLSEN, W. July 24, 1950 [July 22, 1949], No. 18368/50. Classes 18, 66 and 94(ii) A carton formed from a single blank and including a lid flap, and gussets joining the front, rear and end walls and the lid to each other, has a continuous marginal extension of the lid, gussets and front wall which in the closed carton forms a multilayer closure strip for tearing off to open the lid. In one embodiment, the front, rear and end walls, 2-5 respectively fold up from the base 1 with consequent folding of gussets 9, 9<SP>2</SP>, 10, 10<SP>2</SP> against the wall 3 and lid 8, and of gussets 11, 11<SP>2</SP>, 12, 12<SP>2</SP> against the wall 2. The carton is filled and gussets 6, 62, 7, 72 folded inwardly to close the lid, the margin 13 of the wall 2 folding outwardly to form with the margins 13 of the gussets and lid, a projecting strip which is sealed and may be torn off for access to the contents. Tabs 14-16 may form part of the margins. In other embodiments (not shown) additional gussets may fold onto the rear wall and lid and the end walls. The carton may be of transparent sheet and covered with a jacket having an aperture for viewing the contents. The margin 13 may be of double width, the outer width having the function of the flaps 14-16. The fibre direction of the elements of the sealing flaps may be arranged, as far as possible, parallel to the tear line.
