Abstract

693,179. Cartons; opening by tearing. BAHLSEN, W. Sept. 5, 1950 [Sept, 5. 1949], No. 21809/50. Classes 18 and 66. A carton comprises an outer element of tray form enclosing an inner strengthening shell the upper edge of which is turned inwardly to form a support for a lid. The outer element may have corner gusset folds and be as described with reference to Figs. 1, 4, of Specification 693,180. The insert member may comprise strips of cardboard placed crosswise to give a double bottom and side walls 20, 21. The edge 23 of the inner shell is turned inwardly after the carton is filled, leaving a flange 9 of the outer element. The lid may comprise a sheet of cardboard having a sheet of material, similar to that of the outer element, secured thereto and overlapping to form an upturned flange 27 which is sealed to the flange 9. The sealing strip so formed may be torn off entirely to open the carton, or may be removed on three sides only to provide a hinged lid. The lid may have a handle 28. Flanges 29, which are folded under for the initial sealing of the carton, may form a flanged lid when it is opened. The lid may have a window of transparent material 30. The carton may be lined.
