680,268. Rotary engines &c. STURM. G. E. Oct. 16, 1950 [Oct. 15, 1949], No. 25209/50. Class 110 (ii) [Also in Group XXIX] An engine or pump of the outwardlysliding vane type has a rotating casing 10, 11 in an outer carrier 15, being supported on bearings 13, 14. The carrier is free to oscillate about the axis IV-IV to allow for errors in the bearings 13, 14. A vane-carrying rotor 8 has a hub 5 which rotates in bearings 6. about a fixed axle 4. The eccentricity of the rotor relative to its casing may be varied by lateral movement of the carrier 15, Fig. 2, along the axis IV-IV by means of a handle 24. Fig. 1 shows a hydraulic apparatus comprising a pump A and an engine B with the rotors 8, 8<SP>1</SP> secured, respectively to input and output shafts 7, 7<SP>1</SP>. The central portion 26, of the axle 4, is provided with inlet and outlet ducts 29 for the hydraulic fluid. Clearances outside the portion 26 allow slight radial movement of the axle 4 to allow for play in the bearings 6. Channels 31 communicate with pressure and suction conduits 32 which extend along the axle 4 to both its end portions 27, 28 where they terminate in arcuate ports 34. These lead to bores 36. between the vanes 9, which alternately communicate with the pressure or the suction conduit 32. For pressure-balancing purposes, the end portions 27, 28 are provided, externally, with recesses 33. Ducts 35 allow pressure or suction fluid to pass from one or other of the conduits 32 to the recess at the opposite side of the axle 4. The portion 26, bearings 6 and ducts 29 are supported by ribs extending from the outer casing 1, 2.
