Abstract

678,729. Two-part couplings. BRITISH INSULATED CALLENDER'S CABLES, Ltd. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1950], No. 937/50. Class 38 (i). [Also in Groups XXV and XXVIII] In a coupling arrangement for holding together in clamped relationship two flanged members, such as cable casings 2, Fig. 1, wherein one (or both) of the flanges 3 has pivotally connected to it a channel member 5 having a configuration similar to a part of the periphery of the flange 3 and tapering in width from its pivoted end towards its free end where its opening is of slightly less width than the overall measurement of the two flanges 3 when the coupling is tightly made, the arrangement is such that when the flanges are brought into position for clamping and the channel 5 turned about its pivot 6, the sides of the channel being brought over the sides of the flanges and press the latter towards each other to complete the closing movement and to establish in the final position of the channel 5 a tight clamp on the flanges 3 and to retain the channel in position. The pivot on one flange 3 is arranged diametrically opposite that of the other flange. Each channel member comprises an arcuate portion 7, Fig. 3, and a straight part 8 tangential thereto, the arcuate portion extending 90 degrees around the periphery of the coupling; the radius of the outer edge 10 is the same as that of the flanges 3 and the radius of the inner edge 9 is equal to that of grooves 4, Fig. 1, located immediately behind the flanges. Each adjacent face of the two coupling members is provided with a pin 12 and a slot 13, Fig. 3, and the free end of each channel member may have a projection 14 which enters into a recess in the side of the adjacent flange to add to the security of the clamping action when the channel members 5 are pivoted to embrace both flanges 3. In a modification, the straight part of the channel members may be omitted or if retained it need not have a straight edge. The flanges may be square instead of circular.
