Abstract
676,964. Shimmy dampers for aircraft undercarriages. ELECTRO - HYDRAULICS, Ltd. Jan. 9, 1950 [Jan. 14, 1949], No. 1157/49. Class 4. An aircraft undercarriage comprises an outer cylinder 1 pivotally attached to the aircraft by cross-arms 2 which engage bearings 3, an inner cylinder 6 rotatably mounted in the outer cylinder 1, a tube 11 carrying the landing wheel or wheels and connected to the cylinder 6 by torque links 8, 9, a shockabsorber for damping the wheel loads, and a shimmy damper in the form of a friction device 21 between the outer and inner cylinders 1 and 6. As shown the friction member comprises one or more discs 21 in a recess in the lower cylinder bearing 5, and engaged by a boss 19 at the lower end of the cylinder 6. Drainage grooves 20 are provided in the boss 19. When the aircraft is airborne the friction members disengage and allow the operation of the centring mechanism which comprises a cam 14 engaged by a roller 15 loaded by a spring 17. In a further arrangement, Fig. 3 (not shown), the shimmy damper consists of alternate discs of steel and material known under the Registered Trade Mark "Bakelite'' or "Carobronze," grease being inserted between the contacting surfaces of the discs.
