Abstract
549,773. Frictional shock absorbers. RUBERY OWEN MESSIER, Ltd., CONWAY, H. G.,and ORLOFF, G. March 3, 1941. No. 2887. [Class 108 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXIII] To damp oscillations in a swivelling wheel on an aircraft or other vehicle, a brake acting upon the wheel support is applied by fluid displaced from a cylinder as the wheel moves from its central position. An escape valve with a restricted orifice enables slow oscillations to take place without building up sufficient pressure to apply the brake. As applied to a tail or nose wheel on an aircraft a wheel fork 13 is secured to a conical stem 14 rotating in bearings in a casing 43 which may be pivoted at 44 for retracting the wheel. A sleeve 50 is secured to the casing 43 by a flange 51, and anchored to this sleeve by a dog clutch 53 is an inner sleeve 22 tightened by a nut 54 which forms an abutment for a spring 19 acting upon a piston 20 moving in a cylindrical space 21. The space 21 is divided from a lower space 55 by a partition 52 into which is screwed a valve member 70 housing a lightly loaded check valve 24 having a restricted orifice 25. Rollers 65 carried by the wheel fork act upon a cam 64 formed on a flange carried by a piston 56 moving in the space 55, relative rotation bein gprevented by rollers 61 engaging grooves 62 on the outside of the sleeve 22. Slow upward displacements of the piston 56 displace oil into the space 21 and the piston 20 is raised against the spring 19 the valve 24 permitting free return movement for centralizing the wheel. Quick upward displacement of the piston 56 builds up pressure sufficient to expand brake shoes 31, 32, Fig. 3, against a cylindrical surface 72 formed within the stem 14. The pressure is applied through a passage 71 to a cylinder 28 in which move opposed pistons 29, 30. A spring 73 withdraws the shoes when the pressure falls. Specification 549,772 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
