Abstract
576,641. Undercarriages for aircraft. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., and NICHOLL, E. J. March 6, 1944, No. 4155. [Class 4] Castoring oscillations of an undercarriage wheel are prevented during normal taxying conditions by the combined collar and ournal friction of bearings 10, 11, inserted between the castoring and non- castoring elements 8, 9, respectively, the lower portion of the bearing 11 being provided with an integral or separate flange 11a engaged between appropriately shaped surfaces on the relatively movable members: The undercarriage leg incorporates a shock-absorber 5, and a self-centring spring 19 which engages rollers 20, 21, at the top of the leg is also provided, the spring being effective only when the aircraft is airborne and the leg is free from load. The leg may be retracted by swinging about a pivot 22, a spring loaded bolt 26 holding the member in the extended position.
