731,758. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY EQUIPMENT, Ltd., BRIDGES, D. G., KNIGHTS, R. N., and WILLITT, A. A. J. May 14, 1954 [May 15, 1953], No. 13705/53. Class 4. A telescopic aircraft undercarriage comprises an extensible sleeve mounted within the lower end of the upper component of the undercarriage whereby the effective overlap between said upper component and the axially movable lower component is increased when the undercarriage is fully extended during touch down of the aircraft. The undercarriage comprises an upper tubular component 3 mounted on the aircraft by a retraction pivot 4 and a lower telescoping component 5 connected by antitorque links 10, 11 to the component 3 and formed with an axle 8 for a wheel 9. The upper part of the component 5 constitutes the chamber of a shock absorber wherein the plunger is fixed within the component 3 and the upper part of compartment 5 has a piston-like peripheral flange to engage the upper edge of a sleeve 15 slidably mounted within the lower end of component 3 between the limits set by a stop mechanism (not shown). When the undercarriage is fully extended by the shock absorber prior to landing of the aircraft the sleeve 15 is drawn out of the component 3 as shown to increase effective length of said component and thereby reduce bending and bearing loads between the components 3 and 5 resulting from drag of the wheels at touch down. A flange 21 engages the lower edge of sleeve 15 and draws it within the component 3, when the undercarriage becomes fully compressed during landing.
