Abstract
438,968. Vehicle wheels. DOWTY, G. H., 17, Lansdown Crescent, Cheltenham. May 31, 1934, No. 16251. [Class 144 (i)] An internally-sprung wheel for aircraft is provided with inner and outer wheel bearings 14, 7 carried by separate halves of a longitudinally-divided sleeve 15 which is slidable against the action of shock-absorbing means over a cylindrical guide 17 rigid with the axle 18. Further, the axle is slidable within the encircling bearing 14 on a slotted guideway 34 arranged at the side of the bearing 14 remote from the sleeve and guide. The telescoping sleeve and guide enclose a shock-absorbing device comprising a spring 25 and dashpot 22. The sleeve guide 17 is formed as a T-head to the axle which moves in a slot in the sleeve. The slot 34 of the guideway is covered by a pair of sliding plates, the outer one 37 of which is fixed to the axle, the other 35 having sliding engagement therewith, its upward and downward movement being limited by stops 36, 38. The brake drum 31 is formed within the thickness of the wheel, the guideway 34 lying within the plane of the brake and being surrounded by the drum.
