Abstract

762,984. Spring wheels. FLEXELLO CASTORS & WHEELS, Ltd., and WAPSHOTT, S. E. Feb. 21, 1955 [Feb. 19, 1954], No. 4982/54. Class 144 (1). A spring wheel comprises a rim or wheel body 1 rotatably mounted via ball or roller bearings 7 on a hub member 2 which is eccentrically mounted for limited angular movement on a fixed axle 3 of non-circular (square) section, a plurality of (cylindrical) rubber or like blocks 4 being interposed between the surfaces of the axle 3 and the non-circular (square)-section axle hole 5 in the hub 2 to absorb shock by resistance to shear and compression stress under load. As shown applied to a wheel mounted in a castoring fork 13, the rubber blocks 4 assume an oval cross-section when fitted and bear against the radiused corners 6 of the hole 5. The axle ends 12 are of square-section to locate in slots in a fork mounting 13. The rubber blocks 4 are partially covered by friction washers 16 at each end of the axle 3 and coverplates 8 are screwed to the hub 2 to enclose the rubber blocks and also the ball or roller bearings 7.
