Abstract
872,782. Steering vehicles. STANDARD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Nov. 3, 1958 [Aug: 2, 1957], No. 24500/57. Class 79(5). [Also in Group XXXII] In a suspension means for a steerable wheel of a vehicle, the upper member 5 of a telescopic assembly is rotatably and tiltably mounted at its upper end on the chassis frame 14 and the lower member 3 carrying the stubshaft 2 is rotatably mounted on the end of a suspension link 21. The upper member 5 is welded to a coaxial shaft 10 extending through the frame 14 and carrying the inner races of thrust bearings 15, the outer races of which are clamped against rubber buffers 16 by a nut 17. The shaft 10 is steerable through an arm 19 and the movement is transmitted to the lower telescopic member 3 through splines 4. A spring 9 engaged between flanges 7, 8 provides the spring suspension and the movement may be damped by a piston 13 attached to the shaft 10 and engaging within a cylindrical bore of the lower member 3.
