728,176. Aircraft undercarriages. DOWTY, G. H. Jan. 26, 1954 (Jan. 30, 1953; March 4, 1953], Nos. 2778/53 and 6044/53. Class 4. [Also in Groups XXXII and XXXIV] The wheeled undercarriage of an aircraft is provided with friction slipper brakes 30, 31, as shown in Fig. 2, hinged to the end of an extendible mounting, comprising the plunger 36 and cylinder 33, which is operated to apply the slipper to the ground from the retracted position, as shown dotted at 31<SP>1</SP>, after the aircraft has become groundborne. The shoe 30, 31 is hingedly coupled to the lower end of lever 28, pivoted to the wheel mounting, 21, 26, and is linked to the end of plunger 36 by an eyebolt 44. The shank 45 of which passes through a lug 46 on the lever 28, rubber blocks 49 being fitted on each side thereof to provide the resilience necessary for the shoe to turn on the hinge pin 42 sufficiently to maintain fore and aft contact over irregular ground surfaces or when the aircraft changes attitude. A rubber block 53 is also fitted between the shoulders 51 and 52 to maintain transverse contact. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 6, the invention is applied to an undercarriage having a suspension lever 62. In Fig. 9, a brake shoe 112, 113 is shown arranged between the wheels of a bogey type undercarriage so as to be operable by a fluid pressure jack 118 directly below the main shock absorber 109, a drag link 116 preventing any pitching movement being applied to the lever 106. In Fig. 12, a brake friction slipper, according to the invention, is shown applied to an aircraft independently of the wheeled undercarriage.
