Abstract
674,166. Sampling liquids. ANDREWS, R. B. May 4, 1950 [Feb. 7, 1949], No. 3357/49. Class 106(v) Apparatus for sampling oil comprises a support device for carrying a removable bottle or container, a bottle closure member slidably mounted in the support device and movable into and out of a bottle closing position, and a control device connected by cable means to the support device for actuating the closure member, the cable means comprising a flexible cable, or inner member, displaceable longitudinally relatively to a flexible sheath, or outer member, the arrangement being such that the support device when provided with a bottle closed by said member, can be lowered by the cable means into a tank of oil, and, when at the required depth, the bottle opened by the control device to permit a sample of oil to flow into the bottle, the support device and bottle then being raised by the cable means and removed from the tank. A body member 1, screwed on to a holder 2 for a sampling bottle 3, has slidable in its neck 8 a piston 10 carrying at its lower end, a stopper 12 adapted to close the top of the bottle. The bottle, closed prior to insertion into an oil tank, is opened at the required depth by a cable 34, secured at one end to the piston 10 and at the other to hand operating means 33: and slidable in a flexible sheath 35, which lifts the piston 10 to a position where a spring-urged detent 15, slidable radially in the piston 10, engages a recess 22 in a cam plate 20 to hold the piston in its raised' position. The cam plate 20 is carried by a sleeve 18 rotatable around the neck 8 against the action of a spring in a channel 23 at the lower end of the sleeve until the detent engages a circular part of the cam plate 20 whereupon the piston is pushed down by a spring 31 to close the bottle: In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a spring-urged detent 56 slidable in the neck of the body member 1 is adapted to engage a channel 57 in a rod 51 carrying the bottle closure member and operated by the cable.
