Abstract
914,091. Taphole valves. WATNEY MANN Ltd. June 24, 1960 [March 25, 1959], No. 10373/59. Class 21. According to the Complete Specification, a closure for a neck 48 of beer cask or the like has a fixed inner neck portion 41 secured to an enlarged upper end 44 of a withdrawal pipe 45 extending into the cask, and a tubular valve body 52 displaceable in a sleeve 58 against a spring 64, the cask being tapped by forcing an extractor device downwardly against the valve body 52 to cause it to slide through the sleeve 58 to expose an aperture 55 in its side wall, this action permitting liquid to escape via the tubular valve body 52. In this initial setting a lower sealing member 60 on the sleeve 58 is seated by gas pressure against a stationary flange 66 to seal off a gas space between the inner neck portion 41 and the valve body 52 from gas aperture 47 formed in the enlarged upper end 44 of the pipe 45. Further downward movement of the extractor device causes it to engage an upper seal 61 on the sleeve 58 and so force the sleeve 58 downwardly until the lower seal 60 seals against the upper end 44 of the pipe 45. The apertures 47 are then in communication with the gas space between the inner neck portion 41 and the valve body 52. An outer neck portion 42, screwed into the container neck 48 to secure the inner neck and the withdrawal tube in position, has cut-sways 69 to accept a bayonet fitting on the extractor device. The pipe 45 is fitted with a sliding extension piece 67. According to the Provisional Specification the inner neck portion I is screwed on to the enlarged upper end 4 of the withdrawal pipe 5 and gas apertures 10 are formed in the side walls of the inner neck portion. When a nozzle 20 of an extractor device 19 is pushed downwardly against a tubular valve body 11, the body 11 moves through a sleeve 13 against a spring 16, to expose side apertures 20 in the body 11 to the interior of the end 4 on the pipe 5. Liquid can then pass up through the nozzle 20 and out through a rotatably controlled tap 24 actuated by a lever 26. Further downward movement by the extractor device 19, to cause bayonet pins 22 thereon to engage in slots 32 in an outer neck portion 2, causes the nozzle 20 to engage the sleeve 13 and force it downwardly through the inner neck 1 until it engages the enlarged upper end of the withdrawal pipe 5. In this way the valve body 11 is sealed from the perforations 10 and gas can then be forced through a non-return valve 29, thence through a passage 31 and past the outer face of the cylindrical part of the sleeve 13 which now does not seal against the neck 1, and thence out through the aperture 10 in the extractor device 19. Specification 914,092 is referred to,
