Abstract

990,700. Discharging liquids under pressure. PROCTOR & GAMBLE CO. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 5, 1962], No. 4643/63. Heading F1R. A method of filling a piston type pressurised liquid dispenser comprises filling a container 11 through its open bottom while inverted, reducing the pressure in the containter, inserting a tapered piston 17 and forcing the piston into contact with the liquid P so that the liquid forms a seal between the piston skirt 19 and the container wall. A vacuum chamber 29 is fitted over the end of the container and the piston 17 is forced down by a plunger head 35 to the position shown in dot-and-dash lines, where it is held by a latching mechanism. A vacuum is applied through pipe 31c, the piston is unlatched and further lowered until the liquid forms a wedgeshaped seal. Pressure gas is then supplied to hose 36 thereby releasing the vacuum seal between the piston 17 and the plunger head 35. The piston interior is purged with an inert gas, either through the hose 36 or with the chamber 29 removed, and the bottom of the can is sealed. A filling valve comprises a plastic adhesive strip over a hole in the container bottom. The pressure of the propellant supply is sufficient to lift a portion of the strip and when the supply is removed, the pressure in the chamber reseals the valve aperture.
