[Class 125 (ii)] Apparatus for filling jars, bottles and like receptacles with liquid comprising a filling tube 3 through which extends a stem 5 having at its base a valve 4 which closes said filling tube, and which stem has an air and foam vent channel 6, the valve being opened by movement of the filling tube 3 relatively to the valve stem, is characterised by the provision of control means dependent upon said relative movement to open the air vent channel to the atmosphere when the valve is opened and to connect the air vent channel with suction means at the moment of closing the valve and/or when said valve has been closed. Said control means comprise a sliding valve 12, supported by the filling tube and displaceable longitudinally on the valve stem or an extension thereof. A liquid container 1 has a depending spout 2 and filling tube 3 slidable within the spout. A valve stem 5, provided with a valve 4 and an air vent channel 6, is connected to an upright 7 by a forked member 9 inserted into slots in the stem and upright. Surrounding the stem 5 is a sleeve 16 which is supported by a post 17 upon the filling tube 3. At the upper end of the stem 5 is slidably mounted a valve 12 which is actuated by a compression spring 13 and supported by pins 14 which are slidably inserted into holes in the upright and are secured to the head 15 of sleeve 16. Into the upper end of the valve stem 5 is screwed a plug 18 the head 19 of which forms an abutment for the spring 13. Within the valve stem 5 are a pair of air vent holes 20 normally covered by the valve 12 and another pair of openings 21 which register with an annular groove 22 connected by a flexible hose 23 to any suitable source of suction. In operation, the receptacle A is raised to engage a flange 24 on filling tube 3, which is lifted against the action of spring 13 to open valve 4 and allow liquid to enter the receptacle. Simultaneously the air vents 20 become uncovered, the valve 12 being raised by the action of the tube 3 through members 17, 16 and 14. Upon lowering the receptacle after fining, the openings 20 will be shut by the valve 12 and at the moment or after closing of the mouth of tube 3 by valve 4, the openings 21 register with groove 22 and liquid and foam within the channel 6 will be sucked off.
