Abstract
802,224. Filling containers with liquids. EYLES, I. F. April 2, 1957, No. 10703/57. Class 125(2). Apparatus for charging containers, e.g., aerosol containers, with liquids under pressure, e.g., propellant liquid, comprises an adjustable container support 2 and a filling ram B having a valved outlet engaging the container and driven by an operating ram C descent of which is initiated by the placing of a container on support 2 and ascent of which is initiated by a reversing valve 21 operated by ram C. When a container is placed on support 2, it actuates rod 10 to open valve 11 to allow fluid under pressure to flow through pipe 13 to the top end of ram C whereupon its piston descends. The piston rod 17 extends into ram B and carries the piston thereof. During descent of rod 17, ram B first descends until its outlet seals on the container mouth, then the outlet valve and the container valve are opened, the latter by the liquid pressure, and then the piston of ram B injects the liquid charge. Lastly, abutment 24 on rod 17 actuates reversing valve 21 whereupon pressure fluid from pipe 20 enters ram C to raise its piston and rod 17. This first allows the outlet and container valves to close and lifts ram B till stop member 47 stops it and then rod 17 lifts the piston of ram B to suck in a fresh charge of liquid from source E. Lastly ascent is stopped by abutment 24 meeting stop 26. Meanwhile spring 12 has closed valve 11 and ejected the filled container. Interchangeable outlets for ram B are provided and the ram includes a check valve to prevent loss of liquid when changing the outlet.
