Abstract

649,607. Sampling apparatus. ROGERS, F. H. June 8, 1948, No. 15492. [Class 106(v)] A sampling apparatus for withdrawing samples of material from. a closed vacuum or pressure vessel 6 wherein a cylindrical casing 2, adapted to be mounted with one end 3 thereof extending within and providing a means of communication with said vessel, has slidably mounted therein a sleeve 31 adapted upon reciprocating to open and close the communication between the inner end of said casing and said vessel, a further sleeve 39, slidably mounted within the first said sleeve and formed at the end thereof external to said vessel with a closure wall 40, being adapted to be detachably secured to the first sleeve to seal the outer end thereof, a device being provided in said closure wall to open or close said sleeves and said casing to atmosphere at will. As shown, the sampler 1 closed at the inner end by a screw cap 3 is fixed in a vessel 6 which is under vacuum. The sleeve 31 with sleeve 39 inside is withdrawn by depressing a lever C attached thereto which is held in this position by engaging a notch 25 in a quadrant 10 so that the two ports 33 in the casing are uncovered through which a sample of the material in the vessel 6 passes into the inner sleeve. The lever C is then returned to its upper position thus returning the sleeves completely inside the casing and closing the ports 33 whereby a piston 46 is depressed against a spring 48 the knobs 51, 60 being displaced from the closed end 40. By unscrewing the vacuum break needle valve 57 air enters the interior sleeve 39 until atmospheric pressure obtains when the sleeve 39 with the sample may be with drawn. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), for taking samples from a vessel under pressure ports are provided on the sleeve 31 and not in the outer casing and a sample is obtained by projecting the inner sleeves 31, 39 out of the casing into the vessel by a lever mechanism when the ports become exposed and the sample is received into the inner sleeve. On releasing the lever mechanism the sleeves are returned within the casing and the whole sealed off from the vessel. The excess pressure is released by a valve mechanism and the innermost sleeve being released with the sample.
