921,882. Delivering measured quantities of liquid; sampling liquids. LABORATORI RIUNITI STUDI E. RICERCHE S.p.A. Dec. 7, 1960 [Dec. 16, 1959], No. 42107/60. Class 106(5). An apparatus for taking samples and supplying them to a gas chromatography column comprises a hypodermic pipe D pointed at both ends and having lateral holes near the ends and the holes are sealable by an elastic cap a on a slidable member A and by an elastic cap M on a hollow piston rod C which is slidable in a cylinder G. The pipe D is fixed in a removable member E. In use, the member A is moved forward until the cap a seals the lateral hole in the outer end of the pipe in position 4 and the piston rod is pushed in to compress the air in the chamber B and so that the inner end of the pipe moves through the cap M into the hollow rod C. The rod is then filled with the liquid to be sampled and the member A is moved back to original position so that the lateral hole at the outer end of the pipe is unsealed. A few drops are allowed to flow out so that the filling of the pipe is ensured and then the member A is moved back to position 4 to re-seal the outer lateral hole. On insertion of the pipe into the rubber capsule of the chromatography column the member A is moved back and after the pipe has penetrated the capsule, the rod C is moved back so that the cap M, in position 3, unseals the lateral hole in the inner end of the pipe and its contents are expelled by the compressed air. The contents may alternatively be expelled by a gas introduced through a valve. If the liquid has a low boiling point, the pipe is filled from a bottle held upside down, the cap a being in initial position and the cap M in position 1. Once the needle has penetrated the sealing capsule of the bottle and has filled, the rod C is retracted until the cap M is in position 2 and member A is moved to position 4, so that both ends of the pipe are sealed. Pins in bayonet slots fix the positions of the rod C and member A.
