Abstract

743,789. Hypodermic injection appliances. SCHOFIELD, H. P. May 24, 1954 [Feb. 22, 1953; March 17, 1953; April 10, 1953; Jan. 15, 1954], Nos. 2144/53, 7373/53, 9785/53 and 1186/54. Class 81(2). A syringe cartridge is provided with a piston stopper at one end and, at the other end, an assembly comprising a cap and needle, so formed as to be non-retractable during the injection. In the preferred form the barrel 20 carries a cap 24 which is sealed by a rubber ring 28 in a stepped groove 27 so that the cap can only be pressed inwards. Such movement causes the inner end of the needle to pierce a diaphragm 21 and permit the contents of the cartridge to be expelled by pressure on the piston 32, by a rod which, if desired for aspiration, may be screwed into a threaded recess 37. To permit any enclosed air to be expelled, a duct 34 holds a closure rod 35, the inner end of which is fluted. This is withdrawn slightly, to allow the air to escape, and is then pressed fully in to seal the aperture. The diaphragm may be formed as part of a non-retractable plug, instead of integral with the cylinder, and in this case the mounting carrying the needle is supported in a bore in this plug and may have a chamfered end for breaking the diaphragm. If it is intended that the cartridges shall contain two separate medicaments they may be initially separated by an intermediate plunger having an axial bore which is closed by a ball. When the appliance is to be used the ball is forced out of position by the pressure of liquid behind it, and this liquid is then free to pass into the second compartment, see Fig. 2 (not shown).
