Abstract

<PICT:0806073/III/1> An instrument for the manipulation of dangerous liquids, particularly radioactive liquids, comprises a pipette 14, a support 3 for the pipette, a conical part 16 integral with the pipette and engaging in a corresponding conical recess in the support, and at least one opening 22 providing communication between the interior of the pipette and a passage 12 leading to a pump for sucking liquid into the pipette. The pump is formed by a piston 7 sliding in a cylindrical recess 2. Attached to the part 3 is a long tube 1 through which passes rod 8, the pump being operated by handle 9. As shown, the conical part 16 is a downward extension of a receptacle 13 surrounding the pipette. Any liquid overflowing through aperture 19 at the top of the pipette passes into space 18 and does not reach the pump. Figs. 2-6 (not shown), illustrate alternative constructions in which (a) receptacle 13 is omitted and the top of the pipette communicates with the interior of the conical part through an external tube; (b) an annular shield is provided above the opening 22; (c) the top of the pipette 14 is connected by a bent tube to the conical part 16; (d) the conical part 16 is arranged at the top of the pipette.
