Abstract

<PICT:0834967/III/1> In a distillation head comprising a receiver connected to a fractional distillation column so as to allow the vapour to pass into the receiver which is also connected to condensing means whereby the vapour may be condensed and at least a part of the condensate collected in the receiver in which means are provided to enable the condensate or a part thereof to be withdrawn intermittently from the receiver; the receiver 11 has an upper portion 12, and a lower portion 13 provided with an outlet 18 and the upper portion has an outlet 29 leading to the lower portion, valve means being provided for these outlets so that in the normal position the outlet to the upper portion is open and that to the lower portion is closed, and that these positions are reversed when a sample is required to be taken, the valve means being so arranged that in this position liquid from the condensing means enters the upper portion 12 but does not overflow this container during the time that the liquid in the lower portion escapes, the arrangement being such that liquid is only able to enter the lower portion from the upper portion and liquid formed by condensation on the inside walls of the receiver above the lower portion runs into a trap whence it flows back through a return duct to the fractional distillation column. The valve means may be in the form of a glass ball having an integral tail 37 acting as a guide and a ferro-magnetic core 38, the means also comprise an electromagnet 39 provided with an axial rod 40 of ferro-magnetic material which rod extends within a glass tube 41 sealed within the hollow member 31 of the condensing means. In use, the head is connected to a fractional distillation column, liquid is caused to circulate within the hollow member 31 and the annular jacket 19 and a vessel is disposed below the tube 18 leading from the outlet of the lower container. Normally a 2 ml. sample can be withdrawn in 3-4 seconds.
