Abstract

Evaporation apparatus comprises an upright tubular evaporating vessel 1 having a liquid inlet 2 and a vapour outlet 3, a heater 4 surrounding the vessel, and an economiser 5 which surrounds the heater and serves to preheat liquid as it passes to the inlet 2. The heater 4 may be an electric heater and may comprise nine vertical heating elements spaced symmetrically around the vessel 1. The economiser 5 may be a coiled pipe comprising a close-coiled section A around the upper two-thirds of the vessel 1, the <PICT:0886189/III/1> spacing between the coils increasing gradually in the lower one-third section B. The rate of flow of the liquid may be such that a film of liquid ascends the inner wall of vessel 1 and is evaporated before it reaches the outlet 3. A thermo-couple associated with a cut-out switch may be provided to disconnect the heater 4 if the supply of liquid to the economiser 5 is interrupted. The apparatus may be applied to the concentration of radioactive waste liquids or of uranyl nitrate solutions, and in the latter case the vessel 1 may be made of titanium.
