A liquid holder for photometric analysis comprises a sample chamber that is open at the top and has opposed transparent windows between which is a path for light through the chamber, a tube communicating with the lower part of the sample chamber at a level below the light path and extending upwardly outside the sample chamber into an overflow chamber, so that the height of the upper end of the tube is in accordance with the liquid level required in the sample chamber, and has a port in the lower part of the overflow chamber for applying vacuum thereto for emptying the chambers and the tube. As shown, the liquid holder comprises a cylindrical body 11 having diametrically opposed windows 13, 15 and containing a tube 17, as of glass, having at its lower end a plug 25 with a longitudinal slot 29 defining a light path between the windows 13, 15. One end of a U-tube 39 fits into a hole 30 communicating with the slot 29 in the plug 25, the other end of the U-tube 39 being disposed within an overflow chamber 31 which is located alongside the sample chamber 17 so as not to obstruct the light path through the slot 29. The upper end of the tube in the overflow chamber 31 is adjusted until the liquid level in the sample chamber 17 is as desired and is then held fixed by filling holes 41 with cement 46. A nipple 43 and groove 47 communicate with the overflow chamber 41 so that by applying suction at the nipple 43 the two chambers and the tube 39 may be emptied.
