Abstract

556,445. Valves. WAYNE TANK & PUMP CO., Ltd., and SMALE, N. E. May 15, 1942, No. 6627. [Class 135] A slow-closing valve opened by a hand-lever is fitted with a dashpot device adapted to permit comparatively rapid opening and rapid closing during the greater part of the closing movement the last part alone of the closing movement being effected gradually. The valve member 4 of resilient material is clamped between metal plates 4a, 4b against a shoulder on the spindle 6 by a cupshaped member 7 screwed thereto. A cup-leather packing 10 is secured to the member 7 by a flanged screwed ferrule 8 and is pressed outwardly by a light spring 11 into contact with a sleeve 9 housed in a cylindrical recess in a detachable cap 5. The sleeve has a longitudinal groove 9a with a chamfered lower end so arranged that during the greater part of the closing movement fluid can pass freely to the dashpot cylinder. When the cup-leather has blanked off this groove fluid can only reach the dashpot through a restricted passage 12 in the member 7 so retarding the closing movement. The lower end of the spindle 6 passes through a stuffing box 13 and is fitted with an adjustable tappet 16 adapted to be engaged by a hand lever 14 pivoted in a guard 15.
