673,431. Recoilless guns. ETABLISSEMENT MARPAN. April 4, 1950. [April 4, 1949] No. 8463/50. Classes 9 (i), 92 (i) and 92 (ii). . A recoilless gun, when loaded, has a nozzle or nozzles 2 arranged between the chamber 6 for the propellent charge 17 and the base 16 of the projectile 3, and the rearwardly directed reaction nozzles 12 communicate with the varying space which exists, upon discharge, between the base of the projectile and the nozzle or nozzles 2. In the construction shown, a single nozzle 2 is carried by the cartridge case 1 and abuts against the shoulder 5 of the chamber 6. The gun barrel 9 can recoil with respect to a cradle 21 against the action of a spring 26, the cradle being rotatably mounted about a horizontal axis in a support 28. The latter has a sleeve 37 rotatable on a fixed support 39, and the sleeve is fitted with curved arms 35 which guide an arm 34 depending from the cradle. Screw and nut elevating gear 29, 31, 32, for the gun is mounted as shown on the arms 34, 35. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the single nozzle 2 is replaced by a plurality of small nozzles, and in another modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the nozzle is normally closed by a disc.
