Abstract

590,268. Ordnance. BURNEY, SIR C. D. May 14, 1942, No. 6563. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Guns in which the recoil is modified by the rearward discharge of the gun gases through a tube 7 and nozzles 9 as in Specification 586,749, have the tube 7 arranged with its axis inclined to the axis of the barrel 1 in the plane of elevation. In the form shown, the gun is mounted for elevation about trunnions 5 in a rotary turret 6, the breech being opened for loading by moving the barrel 1 about a hinge 3 relatively to the breech tube 7 after releasing a catch 13 by grippirig handle 10. In a modification, the gun is mounted on a tripod stand and the breech is opened by swinging the barrel in the horizontal plane. The downward reaction of the gases on the inclined tube 7 serves to stabilize the mounting. In the case of a gun mounted on aircraft, this reaction is directed towards the centre of gravity of the aircraft.
