Abstract

643,842. Ordnance; small arms. BURNEY, Sir C. D. March 13, 1945, No. 6306. [Classes 9 (i), 92 (ii) and 119] A quick firing gun or rifle using ammunition which has its wall perforated at 8, Fig. 1, has its cartridge chamber 3 of a diameter substantially greater than that of the cartridges or of the breech opening through which the cartridge is loaded into the chamber so that a chamber space is produced round the cartridge when loaded. Upon firing the gases pass from the cartridge case into the chamber which acts as a reservoir. thus resulting in the pressure-space curve having a high mean value. In Fig. 1, the barrel 1, which is rifled with a pitch of less than 1 in 30 calibres, merges into the forward portion 2 of the chamber on which is screwed the rear portion 4, this portion supporting a breech ring 6 through which the rounds of ammunition are inserted. The breech ring also supports and locates the rear end of the cartridge case 7. In Fig. 2 the enlarged chamber is formed integral with the rear end of the barrel 16. The cartridges are loaded into the chamber by a bolt 18, the cartridges being supplied by a magazine which extends laterally to the left hand side of the gun. The chamber volume in both constructions lies within the range of 25-50 per cent of the barrel volume. The provision of the large chamber permits of a barrel of increased length, and to prevent the centre of gravity moving forward in relation to the butt plate, the whole barrel and chamber is shifted rearwardly so that the chamber and therewith the magazine comes in the rear of the trigger. The cartridge case 7, Fig. 1, has a perforated wall 8 and is lined with waterproof paper or other readily consumable covering 11 for the cordite propelling charge. At its rear the case is screwed into a base cap 12 having a skirt 13 whose forward end 14 is reduced in thickness. When explosion takes place the gases enter the annular space between the skirt and case and thereby expand the skirt against the breech ring so that obturation takes place over the distance X.
