Abstract

581,978. Gun mountings. MOTLEY, L. Oct. 12, 1942, No. 14288. [Class 92 (i)] A gun mounting of the kind in which the gun is fired behind a massive armour protection is so constructed that the armour protection forms the support on which the gun is mounted and moves with the gun both in training and elevation and also moves through a short distance to absorb recoil. In the construction shown, the barrel 1 is bolted to the turret head 2 of a tank, the turret head carrying trunnions 13 rotatably mounted in plates 14 extending from the turret base 3. The base is universally jointed at 10 to a supporting member 5 and can be rotated about a vertical axis by hydraulically driven worm and worm-wheel mechanism 29, 30. Elevational movements of the turret head are effected by fluid fed to cylinders 32, the piston-rods 34 of which are connected to the sides of the turret head. The shock of recoil is absorbed by wheels 4b having resilient tyres. These wheels are mounted on the tank structure 6 and bear against a ring 4a on the turret base. Ammunition is stored in an armoured compartment 24 outside the head 3, this compartment serving in part to counterbalance the weight of the gun, and a machine gun 17 is mounted on a hood 16 rotatably mounted on the turret. A system of levers 41, 42, 43 and a trigger 44 are provided for actuating and firing the gun 17 from within the turret. In a modification, the wheels 4b engage in a channel member rigidly secured to the upper end of the turret base 3. Specifications 581,973 and 581,975 are referred to.
