Abstract

772,463. Armoured vehicles. EVEN, G. Oct. 22, 1954 [Feb. 16, 1954], No. 30562/54. Class 92. An armoured vehicle has a rotatable turret 2, Figs. 2, 3, on which gun or rocket tubes 3 are mounted externally thereof, the turret being provided with a loading hole 8 and the tubes each having a rear portion 6 separate from the front portion and pivotable about a vertical axis 5 on the turret 2 so that the rear portion 6 can be pivoted to bring its loading end in front of the hole 8 to permit loading from within the shelter of the turret and then pivoted back into alignment with the front portion for firing. Alternatively the gun barrel as a whole may be pivotable about the axis 5 on the turret 2. The rear portions 6 are carried by a support 4 provided with an armouring plate 12 which, in the firing position, covers the hole 8 and a fixed armouring plate 40 protects the rear portions 6 in loading position. The roof the body 1 of the vehicle is also provided with a covered opening 13, Fig. 2, to permit loading from within the vehicle by rotation of the turret as described in Specification 730,754. The ammunition feed chain 15 permits loading through the opening 13 by one occupant who takes the projectiles from the chain by a sliding motion parallel to their axes, whilst the other occupant in the turret 2 can load through the opening 8 by lifting a projectile from the chain as shown in Fig. 4. For this purpose a sliding cover 17 gives access to the chain and each projectile 18 is housed in two semi-cylindrical portions 20, 21 the portion 21 being hinged to permit opening of the housing and extraction of the projectile. A spring-urged bolt 10, Fig. 3, locks the front and rear portions of the tubes in the firing position, and the pivoting movement of the rear portions and unlocking of the bolt 10 are effected by an hydraulic system, Fig. 5 (not shown).
