Abstract
A recoilless open chamber gun 10 comprises a barrel 20 having an open chamber breech mechanism 11 at the rear end thereof. The breech mechanism 11 includes a carrier member 18 movable relatively to a breech frame member 12 and being provided with a firing chamber opening laterally of the member 18. The carrier member 18 moves from a cartridge infeed position to a cartridge firing position in which the chamber is closed by the breech frame member 12 and opens into the bore 22 of the barrel 20. One of the members contains a rearwardly opening venturi means 42, 48 (44, 50 46, 52, Fig. 4, not shown) for the passage of a portion of the explosion gases to counter the recoil of the gun. In the construction shown the carrier member 18 is in the form of a cylinder rotatably mounted in the breech frame. The venturi means consists of three passages and co-operating venturies, one passage and venturi (as shown) being completely within the breech frame member while the other two passages are formed in the carrier member and the venturies in the breech frame member. The cartridge shown as used with the recoilless gun has a cartridge case 58 of plastics material which contains a propellant charge 60 and a projectile 62. In a further embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown), venturies open through the breech frame member directly into the firing chamber, the cartridge being provided in its rear end with blow-out plugs, which in the firing position, register with the venturies. The propellant and projectile are enclosed in a closed cartridge case. The gun may have a plurality of barrels (Figs. 9, 10, not shown), one for each firing chamber of the carrier member, the barrels being attached to the forward end of the carrier member and being rotatable therewith. The gun may be provided with one, or more, firing positions. An electrical firing mechanism is provided. The venturies open directly to the atmosphere through the carrier member. The carrier member may be other than rotatably mounted.
