Abstract
609,606. Ordnance. BURNEY, Sir C. D. March 18, 1946, No. 8378. [Class 92 (ii)] A breech-loaded gun has one or more propellant chambers for the propellant charge or charges disposed by the side of and axially parallel with the projectile chamber, the rear portion of such lateral chambers being connected with a breech-chamber space behind the projectile, and such lateral chambers being closed at one end by breech-blocks. In the construction shown, three breech openings, fitted with breech-blocks 8 are provided, the centre one being for the insertion .of the projectile 3 into the chamber 2 of the barrel 1, and the outer two for the insertion of propellant charges into chambers 5 having permanently closed forward ends. The breech-blocks, which have interrupted threads, are all mounted on a carrier 9 which has rollers 10 running on guides 11, and the three breech-blocks may be geared together so that they may be opened and closed simultaneously. In a modification, the chambers 5 are not screwed into position as shown, but are formed integral with the barrel chamber, and these chambers have their breech-blocks mounted at their forward ends. The breech-blocks for the propellant charges and the main breech-block may be connected in series with a battery in a firing circuit as in Specification 594,577.
