To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST SoHMfioKING, residing at Essen, Germany, a citizen of the German Republic, have invented a certain 6 new and useful Improvement in Barrel- Recoil Guns, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the present invention is to provide a barrel recoil gun which can be ele- 10 vated without the aid of an equalizer and with the minimum possible expenditure of power and time and which at the same time possesses a small firing height.
The invention will be described with reference to a land gun illustrated in side elevation partly in section in the accompanying drawing.
The cradle B which carries the gun barrel C is mounted by means of horizontal trunnions b in the cheeks of the gun carriage A which is set up on a platform or the like. The cradle B carries the cylinder of a recoil brake and of a running out gear, the piston rods I) of which are attached to a ring 0 fixed to the gun barrel. Between the cradle B and the cheeks A of the gun carriage is interposed an elevating gear E of the usual construction.
The gun is also provided with arrangements which enable the gun barrel to be drawn back out of the firing position shown in the drawing by full lines into the recoiled position indicated by dot and dash lines and secured in this position. These arrangements are not shown in the drawing as they can be constructed in the manner known for socalled diiferential recoil guns. They may consist for example of a ratchet Windlass for drawing back the gun barrel and a pawl 40 catch for automatically securing the gun gun barrel, etc.) is exactly or approximately compensated in respect of the axis of the trunnions, when the gun barrel is in the recoiled position.
When the gun is being served the procedure (as far as this specification is concerned) is as follows :Before the first shot is fired the gun barrel which is in the horizontal position is drawn back by means of the above mentioned arrangement into the recoiled position I indicated by dot and dash lines and secured therein by means of the catch. The necessary elevation is then imparted to the gun barrel by means of the elevating gear E. The position which the breech end of the gun assumes when in the recoiled position and when it is elevated to the utmost permissible limit, is indicated at II by dot and dash lines.
The elevation of the gun barrel can be effected without the aid of an equalizer and with a very little expenditure of power and time, as the weight of the parts. oscillating about the horizontal trunnions is exactly or approximately compensated with respect to the axis of the trunnions when the gun barrel is in the recoiled position. After it has been elevated the gun barrel is released by freeing the catch and the gun barrel then runs out under the action of the running out gear into the position in which it is fired.
If the elevation of the gun barrel is to be altered after the gun has been fired or the gun is to be loaded in the recoiled position, the gun barrel is secured in this position; otherwise the catch can be held in the inoperative position, so that the gun barrel runs out again immediately after the termination of the recoil.
In consequence of the above described arrangement of the trunnions, this gun, in comparison with those guns in which the horizontal trunnions are so arranged, that when the gun barrel is in the firing position, the weight of the parts of the gun to be elevated is compensated in respect of the trunnion axis, can under otherwise equal conditions (viz. equal maximum elevation and equal length of recoil) have a smaller firing height because in the present gun the breech end of the gun barrel, when in the recoiled position is at a lesser distance from the axis of the trunnions than in the known guns above mentioned.
Claims:
1. A gun of the class described comprising a gun barrel, a recoil mechanism, a gun carriage, horizontal trunnions for mounting said barrel on the carriage, the axis of oscillation formed by the trunnions being ad-v jacent the breech of the barrel and so disposed that when the barrel is secured in recoiled position the weight thereof is balanced upon the trunnions, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. An arrangement for guns which comprises a recoiling gun barrel, a recoil mechanism, a gun carriage, means for supporting the barrel for oscillation at points adjacent its breech end, the point of support of the barrel being such that when the barrel is recoiled the weight thereof is balanced upon 10 the point of oscillation, substantially as described.
