- This invention relates to recoil guns on wheeled gun carriages which are intended for firing against air ships. It has heretofore been customary in guns of this kind either to make provision for swinging the whole gun carriage easily and within certain wide limits, (as for instance by swinging the carriage wheels into aposition in which the carriage can be trained by means of these wheels; or by means of special foundations or other devices). Or else the carriage has been constructed so that the trail sides may be spread apart, that means brought outside of the path of the recoiling gun. Besides the intricate construction, gun carriages of this kind have the disadvantage, that they cannot be quickly put in action after the unlimbering and at the end of the firing will not be very rapidly made ready for transportation.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NORBERT KOCH, residing at EssemRellinghausen', Germany, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Recoil-Guns on Wheeled Grun- Carriages, of which the folloyving isa specification.
This invention relates to recoil guns on wheeled gun carriages which are intended for firing against air ships. It has heretofore been customary in guns of this kind either to make provision for swinging the whole gun carriage easily and within certain wide limits, (as for instance by swinging the carriage wheels into aposition in which the carriage can be trained by means of these wheels; or by means of special foundations or other devices). Or else the carriage has been constructed so that the trail sides may be spread apart, that means brought outside of the path of the recoiling gun. Besides the intricate construction, gun carriages of this kind have the disadvantage, that they cannot be quickly put in action after the unlimbering and at the end of the firing will not be very rapidly made ready for transportation.
The object of this invention is now to provide a recoil gun on a wheeled carriage, which is suitable for firing against air ships and possesses a greater field of elevation and azimuth, and which does not have the disadvantages above mentioned.
In the accompanying drawing one embodiment of the invention is illustrated and Figure 1 shows a side elevation partly in section of the gun carriage with the gun in horizontal position; and Fig. 2 a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig.3, a view partly in section and partly in side elevation of certain details, Fig. 4 is a part of a top view of Fig. 3, partly in section, Fig. 5 shows a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3 as seen from the left. and Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3 as seen from the right.

tive to the trail body D. Between the trail body D and the top carriage C is inserted a training gear, not shown in the drawing, which may be constructed in well known manner.
The elevating gear consists of two upwardly extending toothed segments 0 carried by the top carriage (J. In mesh with the toothed segments G -are pinions E secured on a shaft E mounted in bearings on the slide carrier B. A hand wheel F Fig. 2, is provided for operating the shaft E. This hand wheel is mounted in a housing b seated on one of the horizontal trunnions b and is in gearing connection with the shaft E by means of a pair of bevel wheels J inclosed in the housing 71 a shaft G and a worm gearing H H, see Fig. 1.
For the recoil brake attached to a lug a of the gun barrel, see Fig. 1. is provided in well known manner a device which permits a shorter recoil of the gun barrel at high elevation than at low elevation. The length barrel A. The rod Z of the recoil piston L carries a muff M secured thereon at its 5 forward end, and which by means of a bayonet lock,.is connected with the cap 5 of the cradle B, so that the rod may turn but not shift lengthwise. The recoil cylinder, being broken off on the drawing almost entirely, reaches with the gun in firing position, nearly out to the muff M. A revolving sleeve N which may turn but not shift lengthwise is' mounted on the piston rod and hasorifices n for the passing of the braking fluid. Said part N lies immediately against the piston-head L also provided with openings Z The sleeve N has lugs 11 running in the helical grooves 70, Fig. 3, of the recoil cylinder K. The grooves are laid out so that the sleeve N is turned in the direction of-the arrow as, Fig. 5,.when the brake cylinder recoils.
