Description

Sept. 29, 1925. I 1,555,027
J. B. ROSE BAFFLE PLATE Filed April 28, 1924 Patented Sept. 29, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE. f
JOHN 13. Rose, F wannnn'ron, VIRGINIA.
Baum-PL TE.
Application fll'ed April 28, 1924. serial No. 709,505.
(GRANTED UNDER THE ACT OF MARCH 3, 1883; 22 STAT; L. 625.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN B. RosE. a cit zen of the United States, and a resident of VVarrenton, county of Fauquier, and State 6 of Virginia. have invented an Improve- '-ment in'Baflie Plates, of which the followlowing is a specification.
The invention described herein may be used by the Government, or any of its officers or employees in prosecution of work for the Government, or by any other person in the United States, without payment to me of any royalty thereon, in accordance with the act of March 3. 1883.
My invention has reference to improve-- ments in baflle plates for guns, and more particularly it. resides in the provision of means for deflecting the gases which are emitted from muzzle brakes or recoil checks. 9 The practical application of muzzle brakes to guns must provide for a final dissipation of the gases in such a manner that the crew operating the gun will not be seriously embarrassed. The gases following the projectile through the bore of the gun, im-
pinge against the muzzle brake and are emitted, as a rule, in the direction of the gun crew. The quantity of the reduction in the recoil is governed by the direction in which the gases are emitted from the brake and in order to serve the maximum efliciency the exits are usually designed to dispel the gases in a line approximately parallel to the directions of recoil.
While I have shown in a. companion application a method of directing the resultant movement of the escaping gases, I may use the present invention eitherseparately or in connection therewith as an aid in counteracting the influence of wind and the like. To these and other ends, my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, described hereinafter and pointed out in the claims forming a a part of this specification.
I Two embodiments of my invention are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. 1 is a sideelevation of a gun showing my bafile plate in position near the breech; i
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sideelevation of a muzzle brake and gun muzzle, partly broken to show the method of securing a modified form of the baffle plate; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings wherein the like characters of reference designate like or similar parts,
5 indicates the barrel of a gun which is embraced forwardly of the breech by a baf- I fie plate6, the upper portion of which may 05 be bent rearwardly as at 7. Situated in the central portion of the plate and slightly above the 'gun barrel is a rectangular aperture 8, which may be used for the reception of a recoil mechanism or a gun sight. The plate is rigidly held in position by means 7 of supporting arms 9 and 10, secured to the gun mount. If desired, the plate may be p'ositioned at any point intermediate the gun mount and muzzle. The rearwardly beat portion 7 is designed to deflect the gases over the heads of the gun crew.
The form shown in Figures 3 and 4 comprises a bafile plate -11, which is preferably of a circular shape and is mounted at the 30 muzzle of the gun in connection with the muzzle brake. An attaching collar 12 formed on the muzzle brake 13 is provided with .an annular flange 14, against which is seated the baflie plate 11. A ring 15: threadedly mounted on theattaching collar '12 abuts against the baffle plate 11 to hold the same in position. As an additional securing means screw bolts 16 are passed through the collar 12, baflle plate 11, and are terminated in the ring 15. The muzzle brake 13 en closes means (not shown) for receiving the impact of the gases.
Having thus descrlbed my invention,
claim 1. The combination with a gun of a muzzle brake adapted for engagementwith the muzzle of the gun, an annular flange formed on the muzzle brake, a bafile plate embracing the muzzle brake and seated against the flange, and means for holding the baflie plate securely in position.
2. The combination with ajgun of a muz-,
zle brake adapted for engage nentwith the muzzle of the gun, a sup ort iormed on the muzzle brake and a ba e plate embracing 10 thetmuzzle plate and secured to the suppor JOHN B; ROSE.
