Abstract

636,252. Gun-loading appliances. VISCKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and BRERETON, C. F. Aug. 19, 1946, No. 24633. [Class 92 (i)] Means for continuously loading heavy guns at all angles of elevation comprises a rounds carrier 10 with one or more tubular receivers for the rounds lying on the surface of a cone of semi-vertical angle 45 degrees, the carrier rotating about an axis inclined at 45 degrees to the gun's axis. The carrier receives the rounds in a direction in line with the gun trunnion axis, transports them to a loading position in line with the gun's axis and then returns to the round-receiving position. A second similar carrier 11 arranged symmetrically with the first and coacting therewith receives the empty cartridge cases and transports them to a discharge shoot. In the form shown, the rounds are fed by the hoist 19, Fig. 4, by way of a part-arcuate guide 20 to a position in which the top round is coaxial with the gun trunnions 2 where it is rammed by a rammer 21 into one of a number of tubular receivers 12 on a truncated conical carrier 10. The carrier then rotates on an inclined axis pin 5, Fig. 1, to a position in which the charged receiver is coaxial with the gun barrel where it is rammed into the breech by a ram 22 operated by a motor 23. Empty cartridge cases are ejected into receivers 13 on a similar conical carrier 11, the appropriate receiver 13 being brought into place behind the breech by rotation of the carrier after the round from the receiver 12 has been rammed and the carrier 10 rotated. The empty cases are removed from the receivers 13 and discharged to shoots 15 or 16. To permit the gun to be loaded continuously at all angles of elevation, the carriers are mounted on inclined axis pins 5, 6 on a frame 36, Fig. 1, extending from the gun cradle. The frame carries a motor 24 which drives the carriers through gearing leading to pinions such as 32 engaging circular racks on the carriers. The receivers 13 are shown slotted to receive a projection 44 on an endless chain 39 for moving the cases into the shoot 16. Specification 615,830 is referred to.
