Abstract

703,320. Ordnance mountings; disposing of spent cartridge cases. MOLINS, D. W., POCOCK, F., HOPKINS, S. R., and MOLINS MACHINE CO., Ltd. Jan. 4, 1952 [Oct. 5, 1950; Nov. 22, 1950; Sept. .5, 1951], Nos. 24391/50, 28598/50 and 21026/51. Class 92(1) A device for disposing of spent cartridge cases for a gun mounted in a turret, comprises a receptacle 2 into which the cases are ejected base first, means to move the cases open end first out of the receptacle, and a guide to guide the case so moved so as to cause it to move in a desired direction for disposal. In the construction shown a spent case from the breech 1 falls as indicated by the arrow into the receptacle 2, its path being guided by guides 8, 9A, 9B. On entering the receptacle the case depresses a hinged plate 35 which closes a micro-switch in circuit with a motor 21. This motor serves three purposes, namely to drive a rammer 19 which lifts the case through a shoot 4, 14 towards an ejection opening 15 in the turret, to open and close a hinged door 18, for the opening in suitable timed relation with the rammer, and to tilt a hinged plate 38 to guide the case towards the shoot. The motor drives a chain 20 to which the rammer is connected, and the lower sprocket 48 of the chain drives a sprocket of a chain 81 which, by means of sprocket 82, shaft 49, and gears 50, 51, drives a shaft 52. Sprockets 43 on shaft 52 drive an endless chain carrying a pin which works in an inclined slot of a plate secured to the plate 38 and thereby serves to impart the required tilting movements to the latter. When the case has been lifted to the upper limit of its travel it is ejected through the opening 15, the door 18 having been opened in the meantime by a crank 30 driven by the motor shaft. A cam 32 on a shaft 29 driven by the motor now closes a switch 31 to reverse the motor, and thus to reverse the movements of the door, rammer, and mechanism driven by chain 81. A further cam 34 actuates another switch 33 to stop the motor when the parts return to their original positions. Specification 703,319 is referred to.
