583,816. Cartridge feed mechanism. STEVENS, A. H. (Martin Co., G. L.). Jan. 19, 1944, No. 1055. [Class 92 (ii)] Means for feeding a belt of ammunition to a gun, which includes mechanism actuated by the action of the gun to feed the ammunition towards it, comprises a channel through which the belt passes, said channel having a hinged portion which moves on its hinge when the gun exerts a tension on the belt and thereby actuates a control circuit to energize a booster unit adapted to engage and move the ammunition towards the gun. In the construction shown, the ammunition belt B passes from a drum C, through a guideway 2 and a shelf 16 hinged at 18 to the guideway and thence to the machine gun A. The upper side of the guideway is slotted for the passage of a pair of sprockets 4 driven by a motor 12 and engaging with the belt. A switch 20 is mounted on the base of the guideway, and on the shelf 16 is mounted an arm 24 carrying an adjustable screw 26 adapted to contact a leaf spring 28 associated with the switch. When shelf 16 is aligned with guideway 2, the screw bears on the leaf spring 28 and thereby maintains switch 20 in the open position. When the gun is firing, the belt B lifts the shelf about hinge 18, moving screw 26 away from the leaf spring and thus enabling the switch to close. This starts the motor 12 which feeds the belt at a faster rate than the gun can fire and the motor continues to run until the switch is again opened. In a modification, a single switch operates two motors arranged along the guideway.
