Abstract

595,265. Ordnance. BURNEY, SIR C. D. Dec. 16,1944, No. 25295. [Class 92 (ii)] A breech loaded quick firing gun, using fixed ammunition in which the wall of the cartridge case is perforated, has a breech chamber of greater diameter than the opening through which the ammunition is loaded, the gun having no cartridge ejecting means and being fitted with a sliding breech-block 5 in which a compressible obturating pad assembly is mounted. The breech-block shown moves in inclined guides and is raised and lowered therein by rollers 10 connected to an operating shaft 8. Rollers 7 on the block assist in loading a projectile into the breech. A spring 12 presses the seating cone 16 of the obturating pad 11 towards the face of the breech block. When the block is lowered from the closed position shown two spring-loaded plungers 15 temporarily hold the obturator assembly against downward movement, whereby the spring 12 gives a horizontal movement to the assembly. Specifications 586,749 and 595,293 are referred to.
