Abstract

710,113. Automatic firearms. VERWALTUNGSGES. DER WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABRIK OERLIKON. Aug. 13, 1951 [Aug. 23, 1950], No. 19061/51. Class 92(2) Relates to automatic firearms. of the kind which recoils in a cradle on firing and which has a plurality of cartridge chambers in a rotary drum. According to the invention the electric firing pin 14 is arranged in the gun casing 2 and is retracted to a position clear of the drum 3 by mechanism controlled alternately by the rotation of the drum and the recoil of the casing. In the gun shown the casing 2, and with it the barrel 1, recoil with respect to a cradle 22. During the recoil and the subsequent return movements a fresh round from a feed star wheel 9 is introduced into one of the chambers of the drum 3 by a slide 4 actuated by a gas-piston 6 as discribed in Specification 686,654. The firing pin is surrounded by insulation 31, is pressed into a spring-controlled sleeve 15 in the casing 2, and makes contact with a contact pin 20 mounted in the nose 19 of the cradle 22. When the casing 2 recoils a three armed lever 18, pivoted thereto, is rocked by a surface 29 on the nose 19 thus causing another arm of the lever to retract the firing pin to a position clear of the drum 3 against the action of the spring 16 of the sleeve 15. The drum is then rotated by a groove in the slide 4 to bring another chamber into line with the barrel, and during this rotation a lever 21, pivoted on the casing, is rocked by the undulating surface of the drum to a position where its nose 25 engages the third arm of lever 18 to hold the firing pin retracted until the drum has completed its movement. Upon such completion the lever 21 is rocked by the lever 18 to its original position shown while the firing pin returns to the firing position.
